Xinjiang Victims Database

The Xinjiang Victims Database is an independent documentation platform designed to collect and store records of ethnic minority citizens in Xinjiang, who have been locked up in camps, prisons and detention centres, had their documents confiscated and movement restricted, or been subject to forced labour. The records also include children whose parents have been detained and who have been placed in boarding schools or orphanages.

In addition to individual victim entries, the database also includes:

  • Direct accounts from the survivors and witnesses of Xinjiang's mass incarcerations

  • An interactive map that links known camps and prisons to documented victims

  • The ability to filter and export victim entries based on different criteria

  • An analytic tool for detention rates for individual villages and neighbourhoods based on documented victim numbers

  • Ongoing translation and accumulation of primary-source evidence

Using the Database

There are several ways to access, filter and export the records on the database.

To view a random victim entry, select the Victims dropdown in the main header and select All. This will take you to a random entry, which will contain a visual summary of the recorded details for that person followed by more detailed information and any sources.

Use the arrows near the top of the page to navigate through the list, or type in a number to go to that record.

To filter the number of entries, go to the Tools dropdown in the main header and select Filters.

Select your options on the Filters page and scroll down near the bottom of the page and select ‘Apply filters’. Now when you go to the Victims dropdown you will see that the number of entries available has changed - when you select All this will take you to the entries matching the current filter applied.

To export filtered results to an Excel, PDF or JSON file, select either option at the bottom of the Filters page which will initiate an export and download.
